Julia Idlis (b. 1981) is an Estonian based screenwriter, narrative designer, writer, and storytelling teacher. Her debut feature film ADVENTURERS (2014, as a co-writer) was released in Europe as well as China, and her debut TV series FARTSA (2015) was bought by Netflix soon after its national release. Her debut documentary play VIRTUAL (2013) based on the life of the late American chess entrepreneur, writer, and fashion photographer Andrew Paulson was selected and premiered to critical acclaim at Textura Film and Theatre Festival.

As a game writer/narrative designer Julia has taken part in developing a range of video games for Estonian and Italian gamedev studios. Her video game projects include The X-Files: Deep State (2018), a mobile game based on the popular American TV series. The production was licensed by 20th Century Studios (USA) and the game was made and released by Creative Mobile (Estonia).

Besides writing for film, TV, and video game industry Julia is a published writer and poet. In 2010 she wrote RUNET: THE IDOLS CREATED, a non-fiction book on the origins of personal blogs as emerging independent media platforms. In 2022 her first sci-fi novel GARHORIX. TRANSFER came out, marking the start of a sci-fi trilogy she is currently working on. Julia’s poems have been translated and published in a variety of languages, including English, Ukranian, Spanish, German, French, Dutch, etc.

She successfully combines creative work with teaching courses in screenwriting and storytelling to industry professionals and storytellers of all ages, including teens and children who are interested in creative writing. She is member of the Academic Board for Kino Eyes – European Film Masters program and teaches screenwriting at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School (Tallinn University).

She holds a Master’s degree in screenwriting and a Ph.D. in philology for her comprehensive analysis of Harold Pinter’s screenplays.
